The 2018 Oaklawn Show Choir includes an OVPA ensemble of 60 talented 4th-5th grade students. For their 19th annual Christmas Show Choir Concert on Friday 12/21, performances featured jazzy, unique Christmas songs including "Jazzy Suzy Snowflake," "Singing Starlet Miss Snow Monroe," "Rudy Rudolph with a Country/Pop Flair," "ELFIS," and "Talented Tina Tinsel.”

“These kids work so hard all year to deliver the caliber of performances that we offer. The Show Choir maintains high standards to remind students that they are setting an example for other students. Their discipline and practice throughout our first semester was evident during their performance at the State Capitol and their wonderful production today in the auditorium,” says OVPA Music and Show Choir Director Mrs. Kina Clayton. “Students are so proud after they look back on all they have accomplished. I love the opportunity to pair wonderful artistic and musical talent with discipline and academic excellence. That’s what we do in Show Choir, and these students inspire me every year. I also love having former students return now as parents, encouraging their own children to be part of Show Choir. I’m honored now to be working with the second generation of kids in many families.”

The OVPA Show Choir originated in 1999, and since that time has continued under Oaklawn Music Director Mrs. Kina Clayton. The group is known for exciting lineups that mix a variety of music styles and combined choreographed movement of dancing and singing. Student members audition to be part of Show Choir, and must perform a dance and vocal piece to be considered for participation.  The group is also held to high standards for classroom behavior and may be removed from Show Choir for breaking rules or disrupting. To participate, students must commit to practicing their choir CD multiple nights each week and submit a signed practice sheet each Tuesday during Choir Class to show completed practice time. In order to be allowed to perform, students must show that they have memorized their Christmas songs by November, and Spring Concert songs by February. They participate in choir practice during the day and after school in December and March.

Historically, the annual Show Choir consists of 60-80 students from 3rd - 5th grade classes. They are often sought out to perform in the Hot Springs community, regional area, and even at state conventions. The OVPA Show Choir has even performed for three Arkansas Governors. Consistently, they offer a Christmas Concert at the State capitol, followed by the annual Christmas Concert at OVPA, as well as a Spring Show Choir Concert at OVPA to be held in March.  Contact Mrs. Kina Clayton with questions about opportunities to participate in the 2019-2020 OVPA Show Choir.
